Left-to-right — Mr Aderholt, Mr Stearns, Mr McIntyre, Mr Duncan, Professor Morris, Mr Marchant and Professor Alastair Thompson, director of the Clinical Research Centre. At a time when the future of health care is the hottest topic in American politics, Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital has been playing host to five of the people who will help make or break President Obama’s plans, (writes Grant Smith).
The congressmen were given a tour of the Clinical Research Centre, which carries out studies into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, including cancer and diabetes. They also saw the labs at the £11.6m translational medicine research collaboration and heard about the work of the Scottish academic health sciences collaboration, which brings several medical schools together with the public and private sectors. Professor Andrew Morris, director of the university’s biomedical research institute, said, “The congressmen viewed first-hand an exciting and uniquely Scottish partnership combining the scientific excellence of our major medical schools with the rich resources of NHS Scotland. We have created a world-leading platform for patient-orientated research and translational medicine.” |
